It affects 1 of 10 or 1 of 20 women of childbearing age and it may also affects female as young as 11 years old. What are the causes of PCOS? The cause of this is actually unknown but medical experts consider several factors including genetics. The main underlying problem present is hormonal imbalance that causes anovulation, resulting in irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, ovulation-related infertility, and polycystic ovaries; excessive amounts or effects of androgenic (masculinizing) hormones, resulting in acne and hirsutism; and insulin resistance often associated with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. In women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS, the ovary does not make all the hormones needed for an egg to mature so the follicles may grow and produce fluid but ovulation does not occur so no progesterone is made thus result to irregular menstruation and anovulation.No progesterone is equals to no menstruation.
How to diagnose PCOS? Diagnosis is made through pelvic ultrasound and if 2 out of 3 criteria are met in Rotterdam criteria which includes; oligoovulation and/or anovulation, excess androgen activity and polycystic ovaries. Is there a treatment? Yes, of course there is! PCOS can be treated by lifestyle modification, birth control pill, medications for diabetes, increase hair growth and infertility and surgery can also be considered the procedure is called “ovarian drilling” that may increase the chance of ovulation. 5. Most of pregnant women experience leg cramps and in order to lessen leg cramping you can do calf stretch especially when you are about to go to bed. Walking, swimming, bicycling is also a good exercise for pregnant women all throughout the trimester. Doing the exercise it does not only benefit the mother but also the baby.
